About

Hey, I'm Jamey

There's this moment in the studio that I live for - when everything just clicks and everyone in the room can feel it. That spark of energy when musicians find their groove and the music just lifts off. Those are the moments I help artists capture.

I'm a music producer and educator in Livingston, Montana, with a passion for getting real performances and teaching the systematic approaches that make them possible.

What I Do

Creating Professional Sounds

I help independent musicians take their next step forward at Free River Studios. Whether you're recording your first professional demo or capturing songs you've been performing for years, we'll work together to create something you'll be proud to share.

Think of me as your co-pilot in bringing your music to life - whether you're a solo artist ready to record your first single or a band looking to capture the energy of those songs you've been playing at local gigs.

Teaching Systematic Approaches

After 25+ years developing methods that consistently create professional results, I now teach these systematic approaches to musicians worldwide. What I've learned from Grace Design to Free River Studios - that good preparation makes all the difference - forms the foundation of everything I teach.

My Philosophy

The Power of Real Performance

Great records happen when artists feel free to do what they do best - play music. My job is to create that space and capture what happens. There's something irreplaceable about musicians playing together that no computer can fake.

Every Song Has Its Own Path

What worked for one recording might not be right for another. Some songs shine with everyone playing together, while others might need a different approach to work around schedules or space constraints. We'll find the right method for your music and situation.

Systems Over Guesswork

The best sessions happen when you're prepared. I've developed systematic approaches - like Song Modeling - that eliminate guesswork and prevent expensive mistakes. From key selection to arrangement decisions, professional results come from proven methods, not chance.

How I Got Here

Grace Design to Free River Studios

My journey started at Grace Design in Boulder, Colorado, where I learned audio electronics from the ground up. Working on headphone design taught me how sound actually works - knowledge that shapes everything I do today.

From there, I've been on every side of the music business: recording engineer, producer, musician, and now educator. Twenty-five years in Montana's music scene has shown me the power of musical community and systematic approaches.

Why I Teach

After watching talented musicians waste time and money on avoidable mistakes, I started sharing the systematic approaches I use professionally. Song Modeling, my method for testing songs before recording, is just one example of turning professional workflows into teachable systems.

My Approach to Recording

Making the Most of Your Time

I understand that making music while balancing a day job isn't easy. That's why I offer flexible scheduling and focus on preparation. Before recording, I'll help you nail down the essentials:

  • Written lyrics and chord charts (saves time and prevents mistakes)
  • Locked-in tempo (so your song feels just right)
  • Solid arrangements (no expensive studio time spent rehearsing)
  • Clear communication between band members

Recording Setup

During our pre-session visit, we'll plan exactly where everyone will be placed for the best results. Every artist and every song gets a customized approach based on what serves the music.

Getting Started

Want to Record?

For most artists, I recommend starting with a single song. It's a perfect way to get comfortable with the recording process, and you'll walk away with something concrete to share with venues and fans.

I do all my recording at Free River Studios here in Livingston. Come see the space, meet me, and let's talk about your project - no pressure, just a chance to check out the studio and plan your recording.

Beyond the Studio

When I'm not producing records or teaching, you'll find me playing bass in local Montana bands, exploring the incredible music scene we have here in Livingston, and continuing to develop new systematic approaches that help artists make their best music.

The goal is always the same: whether I'm producing your record or teaching you my methods, I want to help you capture those magical moments when everything clicks and the music truly lifts off.
